At first, it was a marketing tool, to solicit consulting work following my retirement from Xerox a few years ago; to bridge over to "real" retirement. The main purpose was to carry a resume, so the original program of looking at "the ecology of technical innovation in real markets" was always on the back burner. Real retirement is now here, so the purpose of the site is somehow different.
I have no idea why anyone would want to visit it, or why they would want to read it, once here. I have nothing to sell. I don't propose to offer salvation or wisdom or keys to success. As I proceed ("I don't know where this is going"), I might chance on something that someone will find useful or entertaining.
Motivation is murky, so I won't try to explain why I'm doing it. I like to explore ideas with friends. One of the more valuable parts of such exploration is the discipline required to articulate murky thoughts. Committing words to a public forum, even if no one sees them, might provide a similar discipline, in conceptual areas that are probably of no interest to my friends.
My father, the late Theodore Smith, was intensely interested in seeing that his life and work was exposed to a large audience. He felt that he had wisdom and experience that would be of great value to a great number of people. He had started writing a book that I will, at some point, try to get into this site.
